Center for Ethnic Studies and Development (CESD) was set up in 1994 by the Social Research Institute of Chiang Mai University to engage in research and development activities concerned with ethnic groups in mainland Southeast Asia. It aims to create an understanding of ethnic people`s political, economic, social and cultural structures, their problems and strategies to solve the problems. It is expected that this would help to increase public awareness and understanding on the value of ethnic diversified culture and knowledge, enable ethnic communities to achieve sustainability, and contribute to policy alternatives.

- To conduct basic and applied research on ethnicity and ethnic relations in Northern Southeast Asia: northern Thailand, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and southern China;
- To strengthen networks between local, national and international research and development institutes and individual researchers in doing collaborative researchs, organizing seminars and publishing books and reports on ethnicity;
- To facilitate the exchange of data and information on ethnic peoples and their development by organizing research training and seminars for students, ethnic NGO workers and ethnic communities;
- To act as a resource center for ethnic studies and development in mainland Southeast Asia;
- To produce publication on ethnic studies and development in order to increase publications knowledge, to provide relevant policies and implementation recommendations as well as the basis for further studies.
